Last year, the Texas Medical Center (TMC) announced its vision to create the number one biotechnology and bioscience innovation center in the entire world, with a new campus called TMC3. TMC3’s founding institutions include TMC, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M University Health Science Center, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, all of whom are long-time clients of Vaughn. In May, the five institutions collectively decided on Vaughn to construct the first building on the new 37-acre TMC3 campus. They selected Elkus Manfredi Architects and Transwestern as the architectural and development team respectively. TMC CEO and president, Bill McKeon, said in a press release, “With the combined talents of Elkus Manfredi Architects, Transwestern, and Vaughn Construction on board, I couldn’t be more confident that this dream team will flawlessly execute the totality of the project’s vision and fulfill its mission.”
The new 37-acre TMC3 campus is designed to bring together leading researchers and top-tiered expertise from the private sector to create a biotechnology and bioscience innovation center. The TMC3 campus will incorporate research facilities, retail space, residential plans, a hotel and conference center, and green space. Parking will be underground to optimize surface area. The first building on campus will be the TMC3 Collaborative, a centrally located DNA helix-shaped building which will contain research laboratories, offices, and meeting/event space to share with industry leaders. The building is planned to open in 2022.
