Harris County Criminal Justice Center Completes Major Renovation

Vaughn served as construction manager-at-risk for Harris County Criminal Justice Center’s basement and first floor renovations and construction of two 21-story elevator towers. The project involved restoring the building’s damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. Vaughn updated architectural finishes, reconfigured the main lobby and front entrance, and constructed new exterior elevator towers on the northwest and southeast sides of the building to serve jurors, judges and visitors.

Vaughn relocated all basement-level MEP equipment to the first level above the floodplain and installed water-resistant materials in the basement to allow the client to recover operations quickly during future flood events. The project also included construction of a 500-year flood-proof barrier to protect the building perimeter.

“This has been the most challenging renovation project that I’ve had the privilege of working on at Vaughn,” said a Vaughn project manager. “We renovated the building while maintaining operations and building access for occupants. We were thrilled to work with Harris County and PGAL on this project and look forward to collaborating with them again in the future.”
