Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at Lubbock Celebrates Grand Opening of Preston Smith Library

Texas Tech University Health Science Center at Lubbock (TTUHSC) recently celebrated the grand opening of third floor of the Preston Smith Library, for which Vaughn served as general contractor. The renovation provided flexible furniture areas, up to 28 student study spaces, five large group study rooms, and a student coffee lounge that includes vending machines, coffee, and microwave services.

Dr. Lori Rice Spearman, Ph.D., president of TTUHSC, was a student during the building's initial construction. “Back then, the unfinished space held potential,” she said. “My peers and I transformed the empty space into a gathering spot to build the student culture. We had long nights with pizza, and eventually, a ping pong table. This makeshift hangout became a vital part of their student experience, fostering community and connection.”

Fast forward to today, that same space has been spectacularly transformed. Students enjoy a state-of-the-art study environment, complete with modern technology and comfortable furnishings.

“This revitalized space provides students with the perfect backdrop for long study hours,” said a Vaughn project manager. “It serves as a powerful reminder of how a simple space, nurtured by student initiative, can evolve into a vital center for learning and collaboration. We are proud to be a part of this project.”
