The building restores valuable waterfront event space that was lost during the reconstruction of the campus marina. Encased in glass on three sides, it includes a multipurpose room, food preparation room, restroom, and support spaces. The building has unique indoor and outdoor capabilities, including a movable glass partitioned exterior wall that allows the multipurpose room to extend into the outdoor deck. We also built an outdoor amphitheater, which can be used as a separate events venue.
The glass curtainwall had to withstand hurricane force winds. Its lead time consumed more than half our project schedule, so we ordered it early, foregoing field measurements. When the curtain wall arrived, the sill assembly did not fit within the allowed concrete pocket. We ground the floor slab to a lower elevation to ensure proper clearance, and still saved time over waiting to order materials. Weeks after completion, the building sheltered UTMB’s team during Hurricane Harvey with no leaks.
