This facility houses scientists conducting clinical research in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. It features open research laboratories, laboratory support areas, a vivarium, administrative offices, and surface parking. Designed for future flexibility, the vivarium consists of two suites, each containing holding rooms and procedure rooms of varying sizes. The facility connects to the South Texas Research Facility (also built by Vaughn) via an open-air pedestrian bridge, to facilitate collaboration between scientists and easier transportation of animals between vivarium locations.
We constructed a 210-foot pedestrian bridge in 70-foot sections across one of the busiest major thoroughfares in the heart of the medical district. Due to the size of the steel sections, we had to shut down the thoroughfare for an entire month. We spent six months coordinating with the surrounding healthcare facilities to reroute ambulances and with the City of San Antonio and other authorities having jurisdiction to reroute traffic during construction. We completed the bridge in 26 days.
