These nine-story clinical and research facilities serve the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute and Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Peter O’Donnell Jr. Biomedical Research Building is a neuroscience facility containing seven floors of research and laboratory space and shell space for a future vivarium. The Cancer Care Outpatient Building, the newest location for patients of the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, triples the medical campus’ care capabilities and contains spaces for multidisciplinary care, genetic counseling, clinical trials, supportive care, and private treatment. A 1,200-car garage and utility tunnel support these facilities.
Before we could connect these new facilities to the existing central utility plant (CUP), we needed to upgrade the plant’s capacity. However, the CUP was actively servicing several existing adjacent buildings. To avoid disrupting service at these occupied locations, we first verified equipment, piping, and tie-in locations using a laser scanner. Then, we created a coordinated model based on these scans. As a result of our careful planning and attention to detail, we successfully connected the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Biomedical Research Building and Cancer Care Outpatient Building to the CUP without impacting adjacent buildings.
