Project Overview

We installed a steel platform on the Dunn Building rooftop central utility plant for a new CenterPoint Energy transformer, along with over 2,000 feet of 5kV feeder under and through the existing facility up to Level Four. We also erected a new 1,500 SF steel frame electrical penthouse on the existing roof to house a 4,000A normal power substation and a 3,200A emergency power substation for future power needs. The penthouse was installed above a functioning operating room (OR).

Unique Challenge

To protect the operating room (OR) from water intrusion during construction, we created a sloped roof section, installed a sump pump for wind driven rain, and installed temporary roofing at the new building perimeter. We modified the steel structure to allow space for the largest piece of electrical gear and installed a removable roof access section into the new electrical room to install the electrical gear. Our efforts protected the OR while remaining on schedule.
