Project Overview

This new office and conference building met the university’s growing demand for student services by centralizing the services into one building in the heart of the campus. It is conveniently located near the Memorial Student Center (also renovated by Vaughn), the academic plaza, and military walk. Its location in the historic core of the campus influenced the design of the brick façade with cast stone banding accents, punched windows and curtain wall.

Unique Challenge

The project site was constrained on all sides. Decades old water mains, utilities, and electrical tunnels posed below-ground hazards. Above ground, the closest point to locate a tower crane was 20 feet from the military walk. To protect students, we placed a crawler crane on a walk pad of 10 inches of 5000PSI, fiber-reinforced concrete along the building’s west side and installed temporary fencing to close off the area within the crane's reach in the event of crane failure.
